Old Fashioned Sugar Pie~

When I was a little girl..we went to an old cottage a few times in Ste-Émilie-De L'Énergie..this is..ap 50 yrs ago..I don't remember much about it..but I remember practicing my ballet back bends..we used to bring my soft pink leather ballet shoes..the flat ones at that age.. all smooth..with the strap.. having a big bear on the front porch that scared my mom..at night.. and a delivery truck that brought freshly made sugar pies from the local bakery~

I make them rarely..but I like to have one around Easter..

It brings back memories of those fun carefree days with old swinging porch doors and crickets at night.. sugar pies and fireflies~

La Recette~

1 1/4 cups of cream..(should be heavy cream..I only had half and half)
1/4 cup of milk..(I used a bit of pure maple syrup because it is that time of year)
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/3 cup flour

pinch of salt..

I blind bake my crust just a bit..it's a habit of mine..I don't love soggy bottoms..

Add well blended ingredients and bake for ap 30 mins at 400..
Check your ovens.. You will know when it is ready..serve room temp~
And Bon Appétit~

  1. Wonderful memories ~ except for the bear, of course! I loved my ballet slippers too, and recitals but I've never had sugar pie. It must taste like caramel when it's cooked - delicious and beautiful. I love your egg wreath and it looks like summer on your window sill with the basil.

  17. Oh Monique,
I will have to try your recipe. I have been trying to find a great recipe for sugar pie for years. My great-grandma used to make them for us and I remember her mixing everything with her fingers. I've missed visiting with you. Have a beautiful Easter dear one!

  21. Chere Monique...this sounds like a true Easter delicacy...or maybe your delightful memories have just stirred my own? I love the old pan, Mother's rolling pin, the ambiance that calls for remembering...so while we watch the children chasing after their hidden surpirses(I don't have little ones yet..will watch friends'!) we will remember and take a bite. I am going to bake this sugar pie on Monday morning...have not yet eaten sugar pie..will let you know my thoughts and myabe some of my memories..

  27. Wonderful story...just sweet and charming. A friend's mother was talking about Pennsylvania's Shoe-Fly pie at Easter dinner. I think many of us have a version of a sugary and simple pie. Your pie sounds sublime :-)
