Chocolate Pecan Tart~

Now this my friends is not something for sugar haters..or just people like me who can pass by sweets any moment of any day..
like my maple cheesecake..both are for sweet lovers..although..I don't find this one..sickeningly sweet.I took my token taste tester bite.

I first made this 100 yrs ago..
and decided it was time to add it to our TG desserts..the pecans..the orange zest  in the crust..how lovely it is all baked up and ready for the pie carrier:)

I had found the recipe in a magazine.Canadian Living..I think..I only have the faded photocopy..and no name of magazine..I know it's page 23..and a Bridge Luncheon recipe starts on that page also..

La recette~

Pastry

2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp grated orange peel
1 cup unsalted butter
1/3 to 1/2 cup ice water

Filling

1/2 cup melted butter
3 eggs
1 cup corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbsps flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup chocolate chips
1 1/4 cup pecan halves or pieces

Garnish
1/3 cup choco chips
1 cup pecan halves.

For the pastry

In a large bowl combine flour salt and peel..Using a pastry blender cut in butter until coarse crumbs..

add enough water to gather dough into a ball..Divide dough in half..wrap and chill 1 hr..freeze half for another time..
Roll out pastry and line a 10 inch pie plate..(I used my mom's glass one.)Line pastry w/ foil.. add beans or marbles..:)  and blind bake 10 mins in a 425 F oven..this prevents shrinking..

Remove from oven..cool.. remove beans etc..

Filling

Beat together butter, eggs, corn syrup and vanilla Mix in flour sugar chocolate and pecans.
Fill cooled pie shell with filling and bake in a 425 F oven for 10 minutes..then 350F for ap 25 minutes or until filling is set and top firm.
Let cool on rack..
When pie is completely cool dip pecans in chocolate and adorn attractively:)

Keep and eye on the pie..remember not all ovens cook at the same speed..I had to leave mine in longer than 25 minutes..

It is a keeper recipe..proof..I have kept it these past 100 yrs;)

I mentioned TG day was probably the warmest and sunniest I can remember..but the next day turned to glum and drizzly..until the sun came out around 3.30..
I went for a short walk.
I marvel at this artistry..everywhere I look..:)
Up and down the street..through porches and entrances:)Of charming older waterfront homes..
I am not a stalker of newer McMansions..I prefer by far..charm.
Look at that porch w/ the hammocks:) Hello..can I rest here?
Show me picket fences..rail fences..stone fences..and ok some tasteful wrought iron fences..
Show me scattered wind blown leaves..and shiny wet old asphalt..
Brilliant crimson..and burnished gold..mums and dark trunks and pumpkins..
warm soups..cozy blankets..fires glowing..
and kids coming home from school to love~♥

Seems like yesterday..when Lucas was this toddler ..in our leaves here..
Seems like yesterday also..but the year was 2002..when we visited friends in October at their lakeside cottage.
2002 is also the view..going up the road I take to our daughter's home.. fall is absolutely spectacular isn't it?
I am so glad I kept these photos..it was my first REAL digital camera..Nikon 950..bought on Ebay..still works..still have it.
Photos do preserve memories.
A friend once told me he didn't take pictures because they never represented the true beauty of what he saw..perhaps they don't..but what a surge  of feelings they conjure~

Look how cute this video is..one of my daughters alerted me to it..it's a commercial for goodness sake but so well done~ I guess I picture one of my grandsons doing something so adorably romantic later in life~

Right here..

    1. We do live near the water..it's down the street..but homes line the waterfront..so you get peeks..through them..in between them..we have designated areas where we can go and enjoy..one is called Jack Layton Park..named after him..he grew up here:)
We had our first frost..and it snowed yesterday! Nothing stayed..but still..
      Bon dimanche Linda!

  3. Monique, I've seen the commercial before, but had to watch it again. Now I'm sitting here tears streaming down my cheeks. Yes, this has to be one of the best! Genius advertising who ever came up with this one. It's one of THE most romantic ideas ever ~ high school through college ~ long distance romance. Too special for words!
Your autumn images are equally as romantic for this Texan who rarely sees a changing fall such as you show. I have to agree, photos, no matter the quality, take my heart and soul back to wonderful memories.
I'm not one to pass up many sweets, and though I love, love, love chocolate, I'll take my pecan pie without the added chocolate. For my taste buds, pure and simple pecan pie can't be beat.
Glad you had a delightful Thanksgiving and are enjoying the beauty of autumn in Canada. In the 60s here this morning, but it will be another warm day here.

it's 32 F here as I type and we had snowflakes yesterday:(
But unusually so considering last Monday we must have been in the 90's.
It is movieland right now where I live..and then..monochrome to follow..

  8. Monique, I am a sweet addict. I only wish I didn't love sweets so. It is one of the reasons I don't bake much any more - I would eat it all. What beauty your fall is there. Ours is only starting. It is just a crazy fall here, dry but I'll take it. Your camera isn't digital? I loved my Nikon that wasn't digital, but it broke. Well, off to my husband's cabin (shanty) with him. He is raring to go hunting and the season starts next week. I will be moving into the new house this week which I hope is better than the packing and moving earlier. Have a wonderful week.

  11. Ohh Monique, I will have to make that pie for someone . . . just to have a sliver myself. It looks like heaven. Love the autumn photos so much. They all are beautiful. I am a lover of all things quaint, old fashioned, worn wooden porches, rock walls, picket fences, etc. We are two peas in a pod. Love the grandson photo . . . how wonderful, and that commercial. Sigh . . . I just began Friday night lights season three. You have me hooked! I am addicted. Have a wonderful week. xoxo

  14. I think that pie is even too sweet for me but having some orange zest sounds good. The scenes around your town are beautiful. I like that side porch with the lattice work. It calls you to come and find out more.

Speaking of old recipes, do you happen to have a recipe called Heath Bar Bundt Cake? I have googled and found some but I thought I had a recipe that had some crumbled Heath bar along with the sugar cinnamon mix in the center and the remaining on top. Most recipes say just sugar cinnamon mix in the middle and all the crumbled Heath bar on top. Could be another senior moment...

It feels like winter is here. I got up to 23.3F this morning! Yesterday is woke to 29 F. The zinnias and cosmos are toast. Thank goodness I went around cutting the last flowers for indoors on Friday.

I brought in a large bouquet of dahilas..they are so hohum..mine were..ho hum.
      Have a great day!

  23. Monique, Thanks so much for sharing the pecan pie recipe. It looks like the perfect dessert for the holidays. One of my favorites! I love all the photos! Just came back from visiting my sisters in Reno and Genoa, Nevada. I'm going to share the photos soon. The trees were turning like yours (yellow, green, orange) just gorgeous! I wanted to tell you the little fireplace I shared on my blog was a gift from my mother. It was an antique and always lighting up a pretend fire in our kitchen where we grew up. Forgot I had it. Lots of wonderful memories. Love the video, very sweet!!

  32. Honestly Monique, I don't know which I love more...looking at those gorgeous fall leaves or tasting that divine pie!
Many years ago we had a home on a lake...I remember scenes like these. Brings back lovely memories. Much as I love Florida now, I'm so glad I had the experience of northern Michigan for 32 years. Don't think I could make it through a winter anymore though. Just too damn old.
Anyway....about cameras. I love looking at the photos too, but often have been caught without one or even my iPhone and turned to complain to my daughter who looked at me and then pointed at her head. Memory, Mom. It's all there in your memory.
I did something amazingly gutsy recently...I am downsizing like mad as I don't want my kids to have a mess on their hands in the future. I actually found 4 VHS tapes of me when I was a child. In the 30's! My sister and I had put super 8 film of my uncle's on those tapes. I watched them all and then threw them out. Nobody interested in seeing them except me. Oh well....life proceeds, right?

    1. Barabara your note rings many bells with me..how many 8mm movies Jacques put to video,so we could watch on our tv..you are right..who will care?Maybe the girls seeing themselves younger..
      who knows..

I know my treasures are not theirs and I know when I am gone..they will be lost..given..forgotten.
I met an aquaintance today while out and about and I commented that she was not working today? She is an artist ..a wonderful artist ..and sells some things at our brocante..she said it's too cold..I don't want to say I am old..but for the cold I am..and I agreed Barbara..I even have trouble talking in the cold..It's brisk today..40F in the sun and a crisp breeze..

We had both driven around though ..on our own..feeling soo darn lucky to live in such a strikingly beautiful quaint small fall town.

Things do change with age..and I see it all now.
      I get you to bits.
