Day two~Ile St-Louis,Ile de la Cité~Forty Shades Of Grey~

You can spot her so many places..even with her head in the clouds

I liked this bike parked in front of a poster depicting an older era..as this was the feeling of the day~

On the second day..
Slept in which we never do!

We ate croissants that Jacques bought fresh that morning..just below..great baguette..comme Montréal..we do have delicious bread here also..many French chefs..

Bonne Maman Cassis Jam..and a juice that is so rich and thick..the name escapes me I wish we had it here..actually felt like real juice.

On our way to get a metro ticket each for the day..and a pass for the week.
Remember we are French..we get to the ticket master..who says..Photo?
We had just been told you didn't need a photo for the week:)
So of course we say no..and I ask if we must go to a pharmacy to get the photo..as that is where my daughter went 10 years ago..he said..no the booth over there..get your picture you can't have a pass w/out it.
I looked like a fool in the booth..the machine did not seem to be working well and I could tell Jacques was finding my uncertainty at what steps to follow quite baffling..until he went in:)
And sure enough the machine was tired..because even the next person had problems..
Fiou..not just us.
So..long story short you get several  very ugly photos and you need one.Well not everyone gets ugly photos..you know what I mean..passport type photos..no smiling etc..all my passport..driver's licences..assurance-maladie cards..look like..well..less than flattering.
I remember..Ellen having a show 100 yrs ago and she even mentioned this:)

We go back and..and he says :"Carte Bleue"..
?
We honestly had no idea what that meant ..here we say carte de crédit..anyway we asked if that's what he meant and he said yes..

so 4 individual tickets and 2 ,7 day passes..totally ap.50 euros..on our Carte Bleue...aka a Visa.  US.

and off we go..
Jacques had picked Ile St-Louis and Ile de la Cité..
Very pretty areas..
The Seine is still sad and le temps is still grey..
We went to Notre Dame,Marché des Fleurs et des Oiseaux..Square Jean XXIII and roamed the streets..

Imagine..  all the years and work..and craftmanship..  that went into Notre Dame De Paris..Un chef d'oeuvre extraodinaire..comme maints chef-d'oeuvres de Paris.

I still remember at least 2 versions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame..  and here..Jacques saw the Anthony Quinn version at the cinema in '56..I was 2..he was 15:).. and the musical Notre Dame De Paris w/ Garou..and here..  so many links!

Charlemagne

At Notre Dame.. a wedding was happening....and the pigeons were part of the decor..
Visited Berthillon..Pylones..Cure Gourmande..and had a French Onion Soup at Les 2 Palais..because it was cold out..and a glass of white wine..
The color of Paris ..is old stone today..the sky..the seine..the buildings..
the little shops add color..dotting the streets.
I loved the area..

That's the line for Berthillon:)

So many lovely shops..

This one had beautiful cookies..candies..and the tins..oh my the tins!

Let's not forget bouquinistes..

Even in the gloomiest of weather..this area had so much to see..you had to look up ..down..all around to make sure you could take in as much as you could..~

Could not help but think of the Alphabet Boys~

A familiar sight to and fro La Tour Eiffel..

not my bike;)

with another baguette and Marie- Anne Cantin cheese and  some charcuterie..oh yes and a bottle of wine;)

To be continued..

I promise..eventually the landscape becomes brighter~

  1. Imagine we had to meet in Costco...still surprises are always nice...we are never lost for words...I forgot to tell you about the locks on the rod iron gate...you still make everything look beautiful!💟 Di

  2. It was nice!
    I spotted you right away:)
There were locks on many gates here and there in Paris..I thought most had been removed..
I'm sure you have a million photos I would love..
I know of ONE for sure:)

  3. I feel like we are all taking a stroll down the streets of Paris with you and Jacques. The photos are wonderful. Why does everyone not allow people to smile for their photos? Back in 1998 I don't think you needed a photo to ride the trains in Paris. I remember renewing my passport a few years ago and I had to take my neck scarf off. Not fair!

    1. I love neck scarves:)
I have no clue why smiling is forbidden..I don't care anymore..but I find we all look so stern.

I am still working on my posts..I have two more left and the 7 days are done.
I'd like to get a small photobook done for a keepskae.
I have a free coupon..it was supposed to expire yesterday..and out of the blue I got an email saying it was extended one week..I can meet that deadline..

Hellebore babies got watered..they will never be able to say..neglected:) It will be fun to show you the pics next yr..hope they go forth and prosper.

    2. A book is a great idea. I'm sure it will be treasured for many years.

You have a great green thum, I'm sure your hellebores will do well. It is amazing to see those tiny seeds grow into such robust plants. Wait till they flower.

  4. Such beautiful architecture there. It is rumored that I am a descendant of Charlemagne. I don't know if it's true or not, but it will be fun researching that piece of information.

  6. Grey and dismal or not, I am enjoying seeing Paris through your eyes. Love, love all that you share. One day I will get there again now that I am old enough to enjoy it! I love the street cafe culture of France! We have a bit of it here, but it isn't the same. (They do try however) There is nothing on earth more delicious than a French croissant or baguette! Looking forward to the next installment! xoxo

    1. We have that street café culture in Montreal..everywhere..but I live in the country..must say the few cafés we have are popular..but it's rural rural rural..no city beat..a new café here seems to be doing super well..it's a "cool" place:)

  7. Paris is one of the only places that is just as beautiful--maybe even more so--in the rain. It is made for black-and-white photos. Every one of your shots could be a poster or card. Gorgeous!

Hmmm...that's odd because now they finally have a 1-week metro card for visiters that requires NO photo. I have one here. They are transferable too.
You didn't show my house? :))
I have to say...you didnt ask...but I Prefer your colored pics rain or shine.

  9. I think the swollen Seine, the shops, cafes, bike and Notre Dame are my favorite shots. Amazing you were able to get such a gorgeous photo of the door without people in your way with the crowds outside. And the mossy green above the windows - beautiful. Oh that cheese shot must have been wonderful. I hope you were able to get a photo of the biscuit tins or, better yet, bring one home. But, I know how that went with the mustard :( I love day two, even in the fog and mist. The photo booth - LOL. My last drivers license photo - OY. The one before was not half bad. I think the purposely but the camera at an unflattering angle ;) Looking forward to day trois! I'll bet you were exhausted on day two after a long travel day.

It's funny..the jet lag is far worse coming home.. there... 1 night and we were fine..we're still not normal..well we never have been but you know what I mean..the door isn't the church door:) it was swarming w/ people..hard to get shots w/ no one in front of anything..tourists abound..no matter the weather..The Marché Des Fleurs..they have a bird allée.. people were packed there:)
I can't take a good photo in the best of circumstances..so passporst and metros..are even worse;)

I think we should have appreciated being 30 way more than we did;)

On a blog I read someone had mentioned..bring back a pastry scraper..when I saw there was no time for everything..I got that..

  14. The French do seem to have an attitude with the public in official situations, for instance like getting your pass for the metro. but for some one who stands there all day issuing passes must get very bored so they make their job seem very important, I hear that it's even more so in Paris. However I'm glad you didn't let it spoil your day, just another French way of life. Grey day or not you did get some lovely shots . which sounds like a good idea to make a memory photo book of all the best ones.

  15. Your photos are wonderful, Monique. B&W and sepia tones bring out the details of French architecture. You visited several of my favorite spots - Pylones where I bought several wild wallets, and that heavenly cheese shop on rue Cler. We bought butter there that was the best I had ever tasted. What wonderful memories your photos bring back. I'm full of adrenaline when we land in the city and completely collapse when we get home. It takes at least a week to get back to Pacific NW time. I was way too timid to ride a bike as well. Too scary. What did you think of the way the French park their cars? Love your posts.

Geesh you ride a motorcycle..and you were iffy? I don't feel so bad now:)

I think you nailed it Cathy..you're still so pumped when you return..on top of the time difference..makes for sketchy sleep..like almost falling asleep at 8.30 watching Bloodline and then wide awake at 2..last night it was 4...Oh lala..
Pulones..I saw the ladybug scale Carol had posted once..I was tempted..but..well..I have a scale.. and I had already given 1 away..I'm 62..what are my kids going to do w/ more?

      Too much stuff..LeeT knows:)She's been here..Unknown too:)

Your photo booth story brought back memories of one of my own. I still have the remaining photos tucked into my passport cover. Yes, the machines are tired or difficult at best. It turned into a funny episode for us.

  22. I will take Paris, rain, sun or snow. It does look gloomy and to think I was there just a few weeks earlier-the people look much more bundled up-we were in a sweater. You are right though there is something to see on every corner if you look. My Dad was saying how he has all these memories that pop up in his head. He went wandering around Ottawa trying to capture a little Paris. C'est impossible. Hilarious with the pass-I knew you needed the photo so I just said they were in the luggage when we bought the pass. One day the metro police were checking -I thought for sure we were doomed but they were only scanning the tickets and gave us a wave when I waved the pass at them. Bon journeé. It does the make the trip easier when you speak French. My Maltese is horrible-I never speak it and it is self taught. One day I asked for a cup of hot water and dropped the q in the word hot-my dad said I asked for "poopy water" he was laughing so hard.

  25. Bonjour, my sister, daughter, and I got to Paris on May 20 and came home May 26. We had iffy weather with 2 days of sun. Just made it in time as far as heavy rains. I have used an apartment rental that I have been satisfied with, but could you tell me which agency you used. I would like to have another agency that someone else has used. We did have lunch with CarolG. She was on the go. Enjoying your posts.

    2. Thank you for sharing this info. We had an apartment that was a perfect location, but I being older than my family had a problem with bath. Have friends that want to go next year with me planning. I feel tentative about this. Carol looks great. She certainly has followed her dream. Did you use her maps? I used the one for Rue de Montorguiel and had wanted to get to Rue de Cler, did not make it. I too think she should try to get a book published. She has some connections. She told me her maps are not perfect for placement on the streets. I do not think that matters. Her maps are full with whimsy and you at least know what to look for. Thanks again. Looking forward to more pics and info. Les 2 Palais is one of my favorite cafes especially since it is close to the flower market. Take care
