2018~right around the frigid corner..

Bonne Année~
Happy New Year~

I love that gate above..

Christmas has come and gone~

It was so white and so pretty~

So much work for Jacques..and the snow removal people..but a Christmas..as if a postcard~

I love the feeling of a snowy day..walking into my daughter and son-in-laws' home Christmas eve and getting that feeling..

Christmas is a feeling..
the preparations..anticipations..yes..that's Christmas..

It's a feeling..that there is so much good around us.
Have to hang onto that..

It's seeing my family together..the ambiance my daughter creates..the food..the delicious food Fred prepped for days.

I think he could have fed "The Hill♥" ~Wink to Amanda;)

Looking at The Littles table..seeing Lucas now at the big table..having Giuliana and Adamo want to be with us on the eve..they are big kids now..adults..they could chose to be with friends etc..so nice to have them..

Giuliana is an expert make up artist:)Caroline gave her a perfect framed print with :"I came ,I saw,I contoured"~
♥ She loved it.
I was quite excited to give Adamo knives.. I think he liked them..he told me he makes a few awesome chicken dishes.

Fireworks..thanks to BIGGER BOYS  we had fireworks..as I watched I thought who is this lucky..? These Littles are soo lucky..family..food and fireworks.:)And a TON of snow!

The eve was brilliant.. blue skies and freshly fallen snow..in between cake etc preps..I went for a walk and snapped some nature..that is Christmas too..reflecting on the beauty of nature..not man made..

In the afternoon..my son-in -law and his dear friend came over and I aksed them to bring the cake over..heavy..:)

Lovely lovely Christmas eve. From beginning to end.

I know it's different for everyone..I read blogs where families are flying off to one family..sharing events..TG at one..Christmas at the other..  here we all live close..so close ..as in across the street down the lane..and the other 15 minutes away.

We've always done the eve and morning..my daughter took over the eve..Fred's mom..it's always Christmas day dinner..
So so far there has not been a conflict of places.

Everyone is so different.

Here Christmas is all about the others lol..Jacques and I exchange nothing..we stopped maybe 30 years ago.Wait maybe more..

He's not a giftie guy.Never has been..
..lol his first business trips when we were first married,he was 33 ..I was 20..I bawled my eyes out because he never brought back a souvenir.:(
I would eye his suitcase as he opened it..and ..nope..nothing.

I grew up the baby of the family..the only girl after they had lost one..
so you can well imagine that if they had an extra dollar..I would be the recipient of something..small but that was us..

when I first started making money..babysitting..I would buy my mom something..she had a collection of el cheapo porcelain:)
But we did that..little tokens of love..
Ohmgee what a learning curve..

I must say though..I don't like lists and wish lists..I am an impossible romantic and I think you just know what someone would love..
I batted zero with J too at the beginning..I loved turtlenecks and corduroy blazers w/ patches..(Ryan O'Neal,Love Story lol)..he hates them ..hates anything around his neck....so honestly ..can't fault him .
He had the courtesy of wearing a jean shirt I embroidered for him..one year..OMGEE..brave man.

One thing made me so sentimental..if you have one moment..go read this..At Sarah's..she posted it on Instagram..♥

Christmas day itself..  it was a tad cloudier..but after lunch..in the aft..when everyone had left here..I strolled up the street and marveled at the sweet homes and how different things look in the snow..

Just like postcards every time I turned my head.

Different than Provence postcards..yet postcards nonetheless..

So ..2018..  let's hope it is gentle to all of us.For all of us.

PS.. The cake.. the cake was cute and I was excited by it..but the taste? Again..I should stick to tried and trues like a great chocolate cake..this was from COUNTRY LIVING..where I got the inspiration for the candy cane theme..

I made my icing..but their cake..not FAB..plus we are all so full by the time dessert comes around..:(
Sounds so terrible when so many have no food..

One of my dishes breakfast morning..lol bake time said 30 minutes..NO WAY Jose..more like 1 hr plus..

Southwestern breakfast strata

Not sure how it got 5 stars..
I made my 28ozs can of tomatoes weigh 20..and added 1/2 a can of diced hot  peppers..  drain all well also..like I did or you could have soup.

Finally..Happy and healthy New Year  to you....
I am looking forward to everything you all share so generously throughout the year.

I am sorry for the losses some of you have had this year.. so sorry:(

I am sorry for the ill health of some..

work worries..

no work worries..

family concerns,money concerns..

The floods..the fires.. the weather..the attacks..

I hope everything is so much better in 2018.

SOMUCHBETTER.

Looks like the weather is not cooperating..in F below..

A multi-day episode of very cold wind chills continues. Bitterly cold Arctic air combined with brisk winds are generating wind chill values of minus 30 to minus 38 across ...

  1. I LOVE all of the red shutters, red doors, cake decor, winter jackets ♥ How wonderful everything looks with a thick blanket of white snow. We have maybe an inch or so on the ground but at least it was a somewhat White Christmas :) Bitter cold here also the past few days but not as cold as you! We were thankful for no frozen pipes :) Our kitchen faucet pipes will freeze as the sink was build right above a huge window well.

It sounds like you had a wonderful Christmas! We always celebrated on Christmas Eve but things changed when Lindsay got married. Now we have Christmas Day - all day with our family so no complaints! Thankful to have our family living here and not spread all over the country.

I am sending you an email about a recipe you shared years ago. Check your email soon :) XXX

  2. It all looks beautiful Monique. I can't imagine how you did that. It is freezing here too and will get down to 8 degrees one night. Very worried about the pipes. I came home to the farm for weenie vet visit and my doctor too. I have been with her since she started her practice and just don't want to find a new one. She said she is going to retire in a couple of years so I'll have to get a new one then. These days, medicine is so different in the States and many doctors are retiring in their fifties. I have so much to do at the farm, but I'm headed back tomorrow night before icy precipitation. It worries me. But, I see lots of yellow and orange in my greenhouse, so I better get out there and start picking.

    1. Believe me..medicine has changed a lot here too.
I am hoping for a whole new generation of devoted caregivers..It's a vocation..not a job..
You either decide to dedicate your life to trying everything you can to help others..in all walks of medicine..dental etc..or get a different profession.
      I sound harsh..I am .
Some are dedicated and have made it their life's mission to have empathy and administer their very best care.
      I love those.

Many can't even get a doctor ..waiting lists..we need new doctors..hope it's not our weather frightening them..

      BRRR..
I know we have a lot of great vets:)♥
But you couldn't stand the cold here..this is unusual though.
And Omar Sharif isn't here nor do I have Julie Christie's great hat;)
Have a nice day..and Happy NY Donna.. hope to see bébé soon:)

Brings the Christmas feeling... it is about the feeling. I so love that you all live so close together and share so much of life. I think it is everyone's dream. And, you appreciate it. Wonderful. Just wonderful. Our daughter and family arrived Wednesday night then woke up sick yesterday morning... our fun has been dampened... at least for the moment. Still fevers this morning. I'm hoping it passes quickly. Still... the love. Precious, I say. ;) I'll take them sick and all anytime. I do so hope it is somuchbetterin2018 for everyone, every where! 11. Monique, it is cold here for us, but nothing like your cold! We are so spoiled with such nice winters. Cold enough for sweaters, coats, and cozy fires in the fireplace, but no snow to shovel. The snow is pretty, but I know it is not easy to live with such conditions. I guess you adjust and it is what it is. Like the heat here in summer. A neighbor who moved here from the north said he loved living in Texas. He said, "You don't have to shovel heat!" I smile every time I think of that conversation!
Your cake is beauty to my eyes. I'm sad it wasn't as tasty as you had wanted, but my oh my is it gorgeous! I can visualize your sweet family celebrating together. Of course those boys want to spend time with you and J!
Stay warm my dear friend and happiest of times as we move into the New Year. May 2018 be filled with all that you list above. We are indeed lucky folks, and we must be grateful. 😘

As for firework for Christmas...? Good grief! It is meant to be Peace on Earth and quiet... have a number of those that use firework forgotten what all those songs were about?!
We did have a very serene and beautiful Christmas with midnight Mass at the Basilica of Immaculate Conception in Jacksonville, Florida. We did drive more south and have been enjoying the balmy and warm weather of 27 C.

  16. First of all, that cake is STUNNING! SO pretty! So next time, your favorite recipe but the same decorations! I know there were plenty of "ooohs" and 'ahhs!"

I loved each and every photo, and even more, each and every word. You tell such a beautiful story of a wonderful family that loves its traditions, its celebrations and foods and most of all, each other. That is such a gift. (And the fact that you live so close makes me more than a tad envious!) Your house made me swoon with that wonderful red door and trim in the white snow! It's a Christmas card in itself!

It's icy cold here, too -- in the minus-digits and wind chill making it all the more so. It comes with the territory but I confess, ten or 15 degrees warmer would be a plus. But with such love and coziness, all is well.

Thanks for your beautiful comments on the post-Christmas post and our sweet little guy. So, "Pearl," here's to another year of online friendship and maybe my next visit to Canada will bring us into the same orbit. I hope it happens one day but till then, much joy to you and your family. Somehow,I am confident that is in the cards!

  18. Sounds a lovely Christmas Monique, and a very snowy one! Loved the snow pictures. Not so fun for those who have to clear it up, but so pretty to look at. All of your photos would make beautiful cards, even the one with the guys holding the cake. They look excited and ready to tuck in! I loved reading all about your week. It sounds fabulous. What a blessing that you live so close to each other. I am so grateful, that although I am not just around the corner some in my family still make an effort to include me in their days via the facetime! Aren't we so lucky to have these modern blessings! I can almost picture you wandering around the neighborhood taking in all the beauty. You are a woman who lives life with gratitude. That is the key to happiness. I think Gratitude will be my word for 2018. I know I am generally thankful for all things, but I think in 2018 I will try to be even more thankful! Thanks so much for all you so generously share with us through the year Monique, and most especially for your sweet, sweet heart. You bless so many with your kind and gentle words and nature. God bless you, your family and your 2018. I hope it is very good to us all, and am looking forward to all that you share with us. xoxo

  22. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Monique! The town looks beautiful cloaked in snow. That tree with all the pine cones, wow! Does that indicate a rough winter? As I write it is -2.6 and has been frigid here for days. All I think of is you and wonder how you get through this on a yearly basis. The cake looks so pretty, too bad it was not as delicious. Jerry made one of his mother’s recipes. It is called a chocolate pudding icebox cake, aka in his family the chocolate bomb. It is a combo of lady fingers layered with a chocolate filling and then when set coated with whipped cream. Very light, lighter than her chocolate roll but similar. The trick is that this is made in a bowl that is lined with wax paper. So when you unmold it, you pray it stays together. It did! The kids moved into their new house on Friday!

    2. Oh he can give me a run for the money in the kitchen. Stay warm and bundle up in all your layers. My car battery died, we don’t have a garage. I hope Jerry’s car runs and he can wiggle his little Porsche out as I’m blocking him. Oy! What a winter so far.
