The Big Boys Birthdays~

We were so busy this past week..and I must admit I applaud that new quote.:"being busy is highly overrated".
When I hear..I'm so busy ,etc..I feel a choice to be busy has been made.
Except when appointments with doctors and dentists car repairs or tune ups etc..sometimes you just have no choice..
It has been a couple of appointement laden weeks for Jacques and I.
Friday we celebrated the big boys..46 and 42.
I decided to make the Nordic Ware beehive cake .I have had that pan at least 10 years..And I used the recipe on the cardboard it was packaged with. The last time I had made the Martha Stewart one.
The little cake tumbled out of the mold perfectly..
Don't expect a huge cake..it's ideal as an add-on.. or for a luncheon..or a small dinner party but for 12..it's not enough..that's why I made more things..but it's got the cuteness factor down to a T.
I had bought mini bees to decorate..but take another glance at tiny yellow hearts..do you see them?
I had to share..again..that wondergirl of baking all things pretty Sprinkle Bakes..shared an interesting method to make home made edible decorations at a very small price..
Go here for the tutorial..I loved doing them and will do more..Noah stole a heart.. and said EUwwww..what is that?  Anyways ..I like them.:)He expected more:) wonder if we could flavor them?  Next I will try that.Noah needs a taste..not just a consistency;)
Anyway the cake disappeared..it's like a pound cake..  num num playing Apples and Oranges;)

Made a new baklava recipe..I'll share it..

I made cookies..I'll post those soon..Chicken cookies for the Chicken men..:)

Love playing  society games w/ them..Lucas is getting into it..The men were moaning the Canadiens/Senators game..while we partayed playing games in the kitchen. And the younger ones Lightsabered and dressed up etc..
That day for lunch we ate lightly as I knewthat it would be non stop munching from the time we got there..
Had Carrot -ginger soup..How easy are soups like this?

A pat of butter..3 sliced organic carrots..a chopped onion..some garlic..some curry powder..sauté..cover with organic chicken broth..simmer until fork tender..and use your hand held blender adding  some freshly grated ginger.. a bit of cream or milk..season to taste.
Love.
So many carrot soup variations..like so many carrot cakes:)

Worked in the gardens Sat-Sunday~
So nice to be outside..even if it's chilly.

    1. It's a cute mold.. looks bigger than it is..Once the cake comes out and you cut off the "madeleine bump"..it becomes smaller..like all Nordic Ware..excellent quality.

  2. Oh I love the cake, it's so cool. I am sure the big boys really liked it. Sounds like you have been a busy bee making all those delicious cookies and soup.
    Have a great week.

  3. Monique, I love that you didn't completely cover the cake in icing. It looks so much better like that. Glad you got to do some gardening.

  4. Même si on se plaint d'être occupé et surbooké c'est tout de même bon signe, ne rien avoir à faire est tellement déprimant !
Ce gâteau en forme de ruche est juste génial ! Est-ce un moule spécifique ?

  8. Yes, ma'am, you did get the cuteness factor to a T!! Adorable! And, your soup is just beautiful with the flowers. Everything you touch becomes a thing of beauty. I hope all of your appointments went well and that you have a more leisurely week ahead. blessings ~ tanna

  10. I love that cake mold - like most Nordic Ware molds I want them all :) I do see the little hearts! What a cute idea - I looked at the tutorial. I would certainly think they could be flavored with a few drops of extract. I would love to try them so many cute ways to use them. At first I thought they were Photoshopped! Busy bees indeed :) It seems doing even less makes me feel busy these days! When I look at the calendar for the week I am glad when it's not filled with appointments - I've had lots of those recently too. All routine doctor and dentist appts. The Boys all day yesterday - that is busy but beautiful busy :) We play I Spy in the car ride to their house for dinner. It has been chilly here recently too - your carrot soup sounds delicious and so pretty with the flowers. Can't wait to see the chickens!

Now I do spelling bees..Max is at Lucas' level..he spells super well..I loved spelling bees as a child..we lined up in class..one team to the right one team to the left.I still remember the feeling of being last girls standing;) and the beautiful books we got at the end of the year for accomplishments..things are so different now.
      I don't mind routine check ups..never pleasant..but routine is good..it's non routine I hate.
I will add some extract..picked up a few more punches..as I had given mine I think..
I am amazed I found time to work all those years;)
      This is better.
      Nordic Ware.super products..all of them.

  13. I know how busy you have been yet you still find the time to bake and make memories...That cake is perfect! Love it!
I have not gotten any pansies this year...it has been so cold. I fear if I get them now they will wither as they do not like the heat...
I think I need to go and get some today...I love them so.

  17. Lovely cake! I've always wanted to make the beehive cake. Maybe this summer when my mom and aunt are together. ♥ In my family, I don't know if the guys would quite appreciate it the way the women would. (Sadly!) :)

Enjoy your garden. Spring is so good for the soul.

    1. Spring is good for the soul..well said.
Honestly..the cake is adorable..but I would not spend $50.00 on a cake mold..when I clicked on these..that was the posted price..
I find some things become unattainable.
The price on mine said $29.99 and I had a coupon for 1/2 off all those years ago..so it was still a lot..but I envisioned a birthday cake..so the expense ..compared to buying.. was negligeable.

Some things are just beyond reach..even if the quality is fantastic..especially for young people or older people on fixed incomes..
Women appreciate it more..yes..but Jacques did say that cake is so cute..after 41 years..he kind of knows what to say;)

Actually..he is always appreciative of most everything.

  20. What a lovely looking cake Monique and you prettied it up so fabulously! I'd expect nothing less from you. You are so talented in that area. Some weeks are just manic, and you are right some of it is choice rather than put upon us. So happy that you are able to get out in the garden to work, even if it is chilly. It always feels good to be out and about I think. Love you! xoxo
