Christmas..and This Is Us~

My piping needs work..I am hoping the finished product will make the piping less noticeable.

Remember how I loved Parenthood?

I have my new favorite Parenthood..

It 's a show called This Is Us..

And nothing bad ever happens Christmas Eve..

Love this show..my husband.. loves it too..

..not one show have we not shed a tear or two..

watch the first episode..you may be confused..but just get ..that these are flashbacks to now..

The other show we like..and in this case the reviews are bad..is Pure Genius..
a billionaire Silicon Valley guy(adorable)..Augustus Prew..♥ starts a state of the art hospital called Bunker Hill and hires the best of the best.Dermot Mulroney..is the DR in chief..need I say more?♥
The Christmas one..you got it  ..we cried..
so who cares about reviews...

I have been baking..listening to Spotify.. Christmas..with the light shining in..granted Monday it snowed so less sunny.. you can tell by the darkish photo of our front taken through the window..but is is SO BEAUTIFUL...but we made our tourtières..who cares less sunny if the snow is blanketing every square inch of our little town..

I look forward to that day..Jacques is the assistant baker and does a lot..unwraps everything..taste tests..wraps up and admires..he loves those few hours also.

My mom made them..his mom made them..so many different recipes..we make ours by flair now..

..no potatoes though as our mothers never used potatoes either.
I made the gingerbread cutouts I need for something I am hoping to make..I made the gingerbread cookies from: Baking A Moment..no spreading and good..
Max had a reindeer..Lucas did and Oli did..Max looked at me and said..mmm..these taste like Christmas..
you can find her recipe here.

I made some toffee shortbreads dipped in chocolate with sea salt on top..
Lucas salted them..and milk chocolate as it's favored by the boys in cookies.

I am happy to say..things are underway for our traditional Christmas eve and morning..

..things have changed through the years..we used to host Réveillon and breakfast..

Caroline and Frédérick took over the eve..w/ a full course meal..last year no electricity:( Yet they were troopers..)

Christmas day is here for brunch..in pjs..and for  Santas gifts that he drops off here♥

Flashback...not Flashdance:)

Found this little gem going through old pics..not many of me..my parents did not seem to be into photography..this photo was taken by a studio..
..and it was one of my Mary Beetles   school of dance shows.. our Christmas show..we had to somersault out of a box that had tissue paper and dance and then do the splits..I have no idea what this costume was supposed to be..I did find another that makes us look like the Rockettes;)

This I think was 1960-63..

I have very few memories under the age of 10..but this I remember..
..the smell of my pale pink leather  ballet shoes..the underneath like a paw:)..the feel of my black patent tap shoes..looking at the precisely placed taps under my ribboned shoes..

the sound I made..tap dancing.

Days of Yore and Joy.

my leotard set..I LOVED everything..

when we moved to the suburbs..I was ten..and MB school of dance ended there:(

I would love to go back..for one more moment in time..

Can you guess where I am?

We have a real life Elf on the shelf here:)

He had to do a presentation in class..so this is it:) A series of a number of photos at his home..being the Elf on the shelf:)

Photos..courtesy of his mom:)
Bonne semaine:)

  1. Oh Monique, bliss. First, I saw the cottage cookies and wondered how you were going to decorate them. Perfectly of course. Then, Jacques helping in the kitchen.... What a sweetheart. I too took dancing and I'll have to show you my dance pictures. First I thought you were second from the left, then third from the right, then I decided I couldn't tell. I've never seen a cuter Elf On The Shelf. Noah is precious. The snow looks beautiful but I wouldn't want to linger out there. Christmas is coming too fast. I'm not ready.

First, Bloodline set in the Florida Keys and now The Killing which I can't seem to stop watching. There was another one that was good and I'll have to look it up on Netflix when I get back to the city because I can't remember the name. You're going to die when you see my pic.

  2. I love every picture, every word, every wonderful feeling in this post more than I can say. It is SO the spirit of Christmas. I love the cookies (I'm baking again today too -- and listening to music!) and that window view. Sigh. We have snow, too, and it's a perfect day to stay in and smell good things from the oven!

  5. It will be a fun weekend of cookie making and gingerbread house decorating here with our big boys ♥♥. I just bought those cute little Wilton gingerbread man decors for them to use among many other little things :) Your cookies all look wonderful! I think I need those chocolate-dipped ones! Can't wait to see what the finished project is, I'm sure it will be adorable. I have a project I'm working on too. I spy an adorable little girl 1,2,3 from the right - could it be you? Same sweet smile :) I loved dance class too. For me it was ballet. I remember my recital where we danced to Marche Militaire :) I wonder where that photo is - LOL. What fun memories. An adorable real Elf on the Shelf you have!! I think he will be a Thespian in school, don't you?

  6. Fun post, Monique! Your piping looks great! And I love the pic of the little girls, those were the days! And your grandson and the Elf on the Shelf. Our 5 year-old grandson named his elf, Davidy for whatever reason. Wish I could post pics of him with it, but his parents are against that. Take care and have a great rest of the week.

  8. I think you are the third in from the right. Noah is an adorable Elf on the Shelf. Your cookies look perfect. Now That I see those alphabet stamp cookies I realize how cut they are. They are on sale now, decisions, decisions. Love the moose too. I have been way behind on baking. I keep getting colds from the grandkids. Now Jerry caught my cold. We need to be better for Christmas Day hosting. I made the dough for spritz cookies but operating the cookie press is a bit hard with the bum wrist. The snow looks beautiful.

    1. I actually got a cold for the first time ever in years:( Thankfully colds go away..Lucas was here today and was sniffling and sneezing..I can't help hugging him..and kissing him..regardless..
Terry those WS stamps..are deep and print so well..imagine..I bought them full price LOL and I am canadian..check out our exchange..yet no regrets..Falalala Merry Christmas to moi.
Spritz cookies ..I loved them..until I stopped using my vintage hand cranked aluminium one..the Wilton etc ones..never worked for me so I stopped:(
They jammed and broke and became unhinged..nothing has lasted..now if WS made one..I might reconsider..I have a wonderful recipe..from at least 35 years ago..from a friend I admired so much..Gail.
I hope you both feel great soon.

    2. Mine is the old model and it has worked well. Maybe I'll let the dough get warmer crank them out and throw them in fridge or freezer to keep their shape. My recipe is from the 50-60's. My mom's friend passed it onto her and I got it from my mom back in the 70's. Hope you stay well and don't get another cold.

    3. The stainless one..trying to remember the name:)I got it from a friend in the 70's..oh those 70's:)

  9. Your cookies look too pretty to eat. How fun to have a real life Elf on the Shelf, he is a cutie.

I always enjoy seeing photographs from the early sixties. It looked like it was taken at a public school. The stage and cabinetry below looks exactly like the one that was in my elementary school. It looked like you were doing a great job in your recital and your heart was really in it. I had dance lessons for a few months. Apparently, not my cup of tea at that age. All I remember about it was from tap dance class, out-back-down-step-step.

Beautiful snow on the trees photograph.

    1. Not sure if it was at a school..seems to me it was a private big industrial looking building..flat..no charm..but I loved it..funny how you can wrap your heart around certain memories..I wish I had so many more..today's children will have many
      ..photo books..photos..movies..good for them❤️
Apparently Brownies were not my cup of tea...did not work out for me..wonders never cease..today..I would strive for certain badges lol.
      Thanks Susie!

Your Christmas Eve and morning sound perfect...you will enjoy...I know this!
Yes the snow is beautiful, and the cold weather should keep it looking nice and white..
    Enjoy your evening...

  14. The best Elf on the Shelf is Noah...and what a sweet smile. My co-worker loves "This is Us" and when we went to Rue 57 in NYC recently, some of the cast were there having a bite to eat. The magic of the season is all around your home, I love the cookies and made my son's favorite Spanish butter cookie from his childhood last evening and texted him. He was thrilled :-) We have snow, too, and it's looking a LOT like Christmas. Those mittens in the window are the cutest.
