Linda's Lentil Soup~And delicious tomato tarts too:)

I love my friend Linda's Lentil Soup..more than the Indian Red Lentil one I think..
It's so good..my daughter asked me for the recipe..
Soups in our climate are a staple..a necessity..a comfort.
I was so attracted to Flourishing Foodie's tomato tarts with parmesan crust.that I was overjoyd to find some minis myself..her ..in Siberia..at a local food market.
They are indeed easy to make..beautiful..and very savory.I ended up with 3 tarts ..not six though..I have a feeling my 4 inch tart pans are a tad bigger than hers.
We enjoyed a lunch of them..
And I too was so impressed w/ the melting the butter in a hot oven to make the crust:) Worked like a charm.
I read another tomato tart recipe recently and there was the addition of maple syrup.I bet that would work so well. It's actually from the book on my sidebar..:)
It was my first time I think visiting that beautiful blog~That is how we end up flollowing I think? Either a comment we loved somewhere or a photo..or a recipe..or you just feel an affinity.
So nice~

Nancy gave me beautiful art/watercolor paper from her favorite paper store..and some brushes/pens from her Japanese Art store..
The big brush hangs upside down to dry.I had 2 very small ones..this one is so BIG..anxious to try it out.
The paper is unlike any I have tried..so much beautiful texture.I split a sheet in half and tried a mini greeting card..My technique needs work..I tried to copy a few small Susan Branch designs again for her..So bad.so bad.
But what a thrill.
We were at Caroline's home for a little bit the day of her real birthday..yesterday..and when we got there she showed me this..She said:"Is this well loved or what?"
I made them each   3 recipe books I think..this was the first..and this is YEARS ago..maybe 12..the year we moved here..
The cover is tattered the back is not even there anymore..the pages used and spotted..
They were all recipes they liked growing up..or even later in life  when they had moved out and on..and came to eat..
Only the very best of the best recipes get added to her book..like waffles I will try from a friend of hers.
That is the main reason I started blogging so they could have whatever new recipe came up..at the touch of their fingertips. When I look at that book..I see that that is the keeper.
Our eldest..Mylène..to the left..will be 40 in August..that's how old that front photo is..  40-4 maybe..xo
And aren't tulips in the sunshine an absolute thrill also?
I love tulips better than roses..  store bought..Except the old many petaled florists tulips that look like antiques♥
Tonight is the before last show of this season's DA..I read that next season is the last.
Too bad~
Perhaps Julian Fellowes will create another..Masterpiece:)
Let us hope so:)

PS..Linda's Red Lentil Soup recipe is from The New York Times....I found it..here..

I don't use a blender..I find the lentils..get a nice texture w/out blending..and I do like Linda..I add small small pasta..about 15 minutes before I am ready to serve.. tiny pasta..:)
Last time I didn't put the lemon..added Sambal Olek..and it's parsley here for J:)

  1. That tart recipe looks wonderful. And a crust recipe that I don't have to worry about the crumble of the cold butter and using your hands to pat the dough into place is for me. I will have to try this. I may have to go back to home goods for small tart rings.

The book you made for the girls is wonderful! How do you come up with all these perfect ideas? I wish I had done something like this for the girls. I am going to show Beth and Gerarda so they can think of doing something for Frankie and Katherine.

Sun is out today after 6" snow. Let's hope we start to see our gardens soon.

Terry.. I have missed having a mom all my adult life..19 on..I wish I had so many recipes..so many photos..so many more memories..her voice in movies..her art supplies..to touch them would just mean so much to me..
All this to say..I truly think that one event turned me into someone who will leave too many memories..:)
And they used to call and say..howdid you make Cara's cookies?
That bread dad makes at Christmas?
So this way..I thought they would have the ones they had been used tolo.
See ? I even write too much;)
You can still make this for the girls..It was before digital for me..I took old photos we had..and I typed every recipe..and photocopied..I think our fried Nick spiraled that one..
But Staples etc do it also.
I bet your girls..and your grandchildren would love you to do that:)

I bought them there..many many years ago..2 packs of 4.Hope you find some..Your Amazon has everything though!
And yes..it was nice smooshing in the tart dough..I floured my fingers quite abit because the dough seemed very buttery wet..but it worked:)

  3. We are going to need warm soup here as we try to adjust from mid to upper 80F down to -8F tonight! I really love lentil soups and will surely try Linda's recipe. The tarts too! Oh my, I can imagine these in the summer with freshly grown tomatoes picked from my garden. Pinning :) Thank goodness for DVR recorders as Downton will be showing at the same time as the Oscar awards tonight!

So sad..to change a face for beauty.
I bet you had a BALL!!!
Welcome back..you must have a lovely golden glow and an even better swing~

    2. Had to come back because I forgot to do the pinning :) Not too much golden glow - I used lots of SPF and didn't even go to the pool this year. Traded pool time for golf time :) I so agree, some look unrecognizable, it's so sad.

  6. Sadly the DA series goes by so fast. I barely settle into it when it's almost time for the last episode. I think there may be many unanswered questions at the end of this season. Your little recipe books looks well loved, Monique. Recipes are such a wonderful gift to give our children. Nothing summarizes a family's history better than the recipes it passes down. What lovely little tomato tarts. They make me think of summer.

  7. Lentil soup is my all time favorite, and the cold temps now really are calling for it. And those gorgeous tarts- they have me dreaming of the summer when I can go to the garden and pluck those warm juicy gems right from the vine. Your photos are stunning and have my mouth watering for both the soup and the tarts. What an interesting way to make the pastry- must try! :)

  8. I will try Linda's lentil soup recipe for sure... Joe was off from school this week and invited me home for lunch one day and made lentils for us. Like his mother did for him :-) The tomato tarts are like summer on a plate. Love the "loved" cookbook! When I saw the tulips they reminded me that I planted some Parrot Tulips in the fall. How quickly I forget! LOL

What a dear Joe you have!

I must admit I had a sweet surprise this week..In Florida..I fell in love w/ a certain line of necklaces..local artist makes them I think..in a great store called POSH..So many w/ cute sayings about the beach..but I am not living there..
So only one at that time could be worn all year here..
But it said I Love You To The Moon and Back..
Now I have given the girls barcelets w/ those words on them..But I could never buy myself a necklace that said that..Jacques was outside leaning on the wall..he siad..Nothing? I said yes but imagine..it said..bla bla bla..

He actually went back and bought it in Nov..and surprised me this February with it..
      Loved that.

  11. As always a feast Monique. All of it, from the soup, to the tarts, the papers and pens, but most of all that well loved book and your words. My oldest turns 40 in May. We are all of an age are we not. Wondering how we got to be the mothers of forty year olds? It seems to have happened over night. Funny how that goes. My youngest is 26 now. Seems just yesterday he was a babe in arms. Love and hugs to you. Have a great week! xoxoxo

  16. I make lentil soup and sometimes tomato tarts, but none are as lovely as yours Monique. Love the photo and the book. Lots of great memories there. We planted lots of red tulips several years ago and have never seen them bloom (don't spend the winter there anymore.) What a shame. I would have really enjoyed picking bouquets in the winter.
