La Fin Des Jardins~

The gardens are almost all put to sleep apart from the ones at the very front of the house..there has been no frost here.. so I am leaving them until they look really really bad..I can't tell you how many trailer fulls..and wheelbarrows have been filled and hauled..
Not to mention leaf blowing.. almost every day..and the next morning a carpet out back again..the 3 century old maples just love to wall to wall us~ Oh but they are glory through the windows and reflecting on all things glass near them..~
Saturday was beautiful so I went to the market again..bought 2 little signs from an artist I favor~
The cyclist weathervane....well she just made me smile~:)To put that somewhere would add such whimsy.
Made Moomie Buns for pulled pork sandwiches..Did them in the machine..baked in the oven..
A friend inspired me to try oil paints..my mom was a fabulous painter..Fabulous..as in a master.I love her work..Anyways I bought a very reasonable set of Artist's Loft oils..under $10.00 to see if I would like..I had 3 small canvases here.
I used a pic of Lucas walking ..taken at Sandy Beach..and tried my hand.. I loved it..then I found out..you should Gesso a board..and use solvent for the first coats..so I thought if I loved doing it the wrong way..I'll love  it more the right way..I've tried a landscape and a sap bucket filled with hydrangeas..
Both are terribly pitiful..
And I think my love affair was temporary.
I'm so fickle..
But you should see them.So bad.
And my husband wondering how blue paint found it's way to his hands is just reaffirming my concern with oils..
So I went back to doing a small watercolor to encourage myself.
Why isn't talent inherited?:) Like a great voice..(she had).♥. musical talent..(she had..)♥.. art..(she had)..♥
Somewhere in our genetics..there should be one thing that you wished came naturally and more easily..to be passed onto you..
The Moomie Buns?
Anyone can make:)
Try them..they are so good..No great genes needed.~

  1. when the first signs of autumn appear sometimes it's a shame to have to pull up the plants that are past their best, but still flowering, The painting of your grandson is good. You should be well pleased with the result of painting in oil, even if it wasn't painted to the rule book. At least you've tried oils, so totally different from watercolour. Why are we always so hard on ourselves, for not being as we expect we should be ?
Thank for for your nice comments about my orange tree.

  3. I'm always sad to pull up our summer flowers. The zinnas have been so pretty this year and the basil still looks pretty good considering. Soon our beds will be filled with winter pansies, who will bloom well into the spring. I'm anxious to get south and plant some basil, rosemary & thyme as a start for our new herb garden there. To be without a rosemary bush makes me very sad.

  10. I also see you as a very talented artist...mediums vary from person to person, or even from era to era in a person's life...Thinking of Matisse & his early paintings to later work & then to the papercuts...Anyway, your photos & your endeavors, from cooking to the garden to the embroidery to oil painting, to living your family life to your zest for beauty & art, all reflect your talent...in my opinion, anyway. Yes, agreeing with noters, we are hard on ourselves, but when we just go ahead & follow our passions, without the worry, it is so fine...Congratulations re. the oils & I say, if you enjoy the process, then keep with it...but being a painter is not the only way to express one's talents, n'est-ce pas? I don't usually "advise" but these words are for myself as well...

  11. yes I would say you inherited your mothers talent, I love your paintings and you have a way of living an artful, beautiful life, even your garden cuttings and cleanup are beautiful :)

  12. Just loved the pics. Oils are very forgiving; you can change and improve on them time and again. Try a glaze technique. The drawback is that each time you paint, you have to let it dry before working back into it. Also, I'm sure you've already noticed, the cleanup is tiring, but the brushes are too expensive not to. I used to always gesso the canvas but not any more. Are you taking classes? Oil painting classes will really help at the beginning.

    1. My friend.. the artist came for lunch today..I can sandpaper ..lightly ..the ruined boards and Gesso on top:) and try again! She said so:)
The cleanup is totally different.. yes tiring..watercolor so easy..
      Watercolor not forgiving:)
Andin both mediums you have to let dry..but in QC I find the humidity high..so for oils the drying time is looooong it seems!

      No classes..:(
Thanks for the tips..as always:) I appreciate them!

  14. I love your oil painting ~ it will be an even more cherished piece when a certain little boy looks back at it when he is a man. Monique, I'm sure if your mama could tell you, she would reassure you that you are VERY talented, you do soo many things so well. Just ask any of us HERE, following you!! ((hugs))
And your photos...oh! :) The market, so fun ~ and the sign, and the bicycle, the crates . . . so much to look at.
Moomie's are a long time favorite here, but you already know that! ;) Have a happy evening my friend. xo

  17. I loved all of your pictures Monique, the garden, the market, the moomies, the oil painting. I used to paint with oils a very long time ago, but much prefer my water colours. I think you are such a very talented person. No surprise there. I will have to try moomies. I have them on my to do list, which is very long, but at least I have a list! I find the garden this time of year a mix of sadness and beauty. I hate to see it all ending . . . but I love the promise that it will all return. Love you much. xxoo

  18. I love to bake Monique, and I would do it every single day, but every time I eat bread OMG I gain more and more pounds-)) You know those skinny people who can eat anything and stay skinny, I wish I can be like that. I love food and I love to eat, but all my life I am on a diet-)))

Pictures are beautiful as usual. Have a lovely autumn day!

  20. The biker weathervane is a hoot. Love things like that!
My grandmother was a pretty good artist...mostly watercolors, but we do have some oils too. Agree totally about inheriting talent. None in my family. I can barely draw a stick figure and lack imagination to boot. Oh well, I am an organizational star. We all have our talents!

  21. Nana this post took my breath away...that market looks like a place I would really go crazy! I saw so many things just in your picture I would love! Your Moomies look perfect! I also was turned on to them by Mary....a long time ago. The painting of Lucas is lovely...there is so much movement in it...i love it!

  23. You have no idea how long I have been holding on to that recipe for Moomie's. I was just looking at the Williams-Sonoma website and found some nice buns that are shipped from a vendor in the New England states. Very tempting to buy them since I have a gift card and it's nice to have a special treat arrive at the door ;o)

P.S. I made your Ricardo's honey shrimp tonight and we both loved it.

  25. I've never heard of Moomie's Buns, until now. They look perfect.
But not as perfect as your painting of Lucas. You do realize, that now you'll have to paint the other boys. I can just imagine the stories they'll tell someday, of their talented nana.
