Carbs ..and soups..

I just love breads and soups..For 100 years I never ate bread. In my family growing up..bread was not something on the table at dinner.Dinner was dinner..Period lol.
In Jacques' family bread seemed to always be on the table.
Since I was evidently and clearly overweight from 10- 15..(the worst years right? For bullying?)
I stopped eating bread at 15 to stay lighter..and stopped eating Fiesta Chips:)
And this went on most of my adult life..Bread? Oh no thank you..
Unless I was out.
But then..bread became something I could easily eat one year..in my 50's and I have never stopped.
Not in a huge way..but I do make it and love a slice here and there.
Love soups too..
I made Ricardo's bread twice in 10 days;)
Because I knew I would be having French Onion Soup twice..and other ideas were swimming in my head.
A poached egg on his toasted bread is heaven.
I have shared the link many times.

Marie made a small batch biscuit recipe and J loves biscuits so I made those easy peasy ones too.

Ricardo's French Onion soup is also ..so very easy..
Make sure you caramelize those onions..and I add thyme.

I love  Bonne Femme soups..recipes abound!
I love adding maple syrup thank you very much..kicks it up a whole sweet fall notch.
Remember when you make soups..
TASTE.. not salty enough and you are eating..well nothing really..pepper..  herbs..a lovely rind of parm..in certain soups.
For the Bonne Femme soup..I scribbled it in on IG..you can find it is this post.

Just documenting what's up..

Blogging is my journal..kind of..so I keep going lol..

Hope to do my garlic bed tomorrow.
Fall has definitely arrived.
Haven't received my  tulips bulbs yet..
Fairies are in the Sheshed..tubers dug up..some..still praying for 1 dahlia flower...Not praying anymore as I finish this draft..

No Thanksgiving..watching the US from afar..curious as to the outcome.
God Bless the doctors..nurses..aides..TEACHERS.
In the words of Tiny Tim..
God Bless Us Everyone.
And hopefully ..Christmas en famille is in the cards.

In garden terms..this sums up 2020.
Not having the opportunity to check out my fave nurseries..I bought 1 dahlia..I had stopped growing them because of earwigs and slugs..
But caved for Café Au Lait♥
I started it INDOORS so it had a head start.
This CAL was babied..staked..watered..like an only child..
many nights a sheet in case of frost because I had buds.

Even the night this happened.
C'est fini.
Good news..no slugs no earwigs this year..wow..
But no flowers.
And here you have 2020.

So I will dig up the tuber..and try again next year.

Still..
I prepped my garlic bed..ripped out all the tomato and nasturtium plants..
And thanked God I had had this work to do this summer...

And thought..winter..please be kind to all of us.♥

  1. I do love a poached egg on buttered sourdough toast. Hard to resist, but I try to watch carbs. Too bad about the dahlia - perhaps next year will be better. My dahlias didn't do well this year, either.
We are not so affected by Covid here, and are going to meet with our children and grands for a very casual meal on Sunday. Hopefully outdoors, but if it's raining we'll move indoors. I figure if I'm allowed to be with 80 students, surely I can meet with my family who are less exposed.

    1. That is the kicker..we are not allowed..yet all my children work..one is a teacher.. all the Littles are in school..but no one can come in here. And I can't go in there.
It is not good here, still shocking to me..
So sad in so many ways..not just for selfish reasons like mine..for serious reasons.I feel for everyone..
We all do...take care and have a good weekend:)

  3. Well I understand the struggle with weight...not as a child but as an adult. I thought I'd seen a picture of you somewhere? Maybe an old blog post? But I always picture an elegant, poised, fun lady in my mind when I read your posts....someone I wish I could visit, walk through your garden & have brunch with. I love your blog & IG feed.
And even though I try not to have bread at my house, my husband has juvenile diabetes & never eats it, I seem to to find it more than I should. It's a favorite food for sure!

I bought garlic to plant but I think it's still much to hot here. We're reaching 87'F tomorrow. I had to buy grocery store garlic...I could not find garlic to plant anywhere without paying a huge price for it. But some gardeners in my Arkansas Gardening group(my state) said they had used organic grocery store garlic with good results. I went to the most posh, organic grocery store in my area & bought some so we'll see. Oh I do hope it does well. I've never grown it before but I've bought pounds of it this summer cooking at home.

I'm sorry about your dahlia. My mother grew the most gorgeous dahlias. She loved them & carefully dug them up every fall. I've never had her green thumb with dahlias or sweet peas...another thing she grew that I love but cannot keep alive.

    1. I am excited for your garlic!
      I just did mine..

and you know buying local garlic is what I was told.
But my very first foray into garlic growing came by way of ONTARIO!
Friends we met in Florida..loved to garden and they knew I did..they asked if I had grown garlic and I said I tried and had no luck..
      They said nothing easier.
And they sent me some of theirs..not even the same province.
They told me when to plant..etc..
      That was it.
      I had success..and never stopped.
I then bought some local garlic ..to grow my harvest..

I have an ap square of 8x8..that gets full sun about 6 hrs plus.
I used to have pretty flowers there ..it's just by the porch..so it was a hard trade off..no more flowers there..
      Still..:)
      I don't have fabulous earth..
I did add a few bags of manure since I didn't have chickens this yr..but my manure..did not look grand at all.
I use a garden dibbler..it was a gift maybe 15 yrs ago and I use it solely for the garlic. It's perfect.
Pointy end..wood..markings but I eyeball it.
      It's just so handy.
      I plant..About 2 inches deep pointy side up..about 5 inches apart..
I get ap 100 in that bed..I didn't count today.

I am sure you will get good results..

      I can't wait to hear:)

Since my teen yrs..I managed to lose the weight at 16 ish..and stay pretty much the same except during a couple of times where for one reason or another I lost weight.
      Our shape changes though lol:)

Well it's not funny actually..but it's the truth here..
I am so grateful for your kind words.
It's like..you know Charlie Mackesy..I love his book..it's full of encouragement and optimism and kindness.
      I love that.
      Thank you.
I have no memories of my mom gardening except when we actually owned a house and she planted portulaca and roses:)
I was so young.. no chance to appreciate her to her fullest unfortunately.
      Have a great week.

  4. Oh bread, I adore bread but it often disagrees with me. Scones are another favourite, no cream though, just butter and jam. Your soup looks absolutely delicious.

  5. I love French onion soup besides all kind of soups. We - me and my husband - we eat a soup bowl every night as dinner. Can you believe?
Not the same with bread. Bread, I eat a slice at breakfast and that's all.
    Have a nice weekend.

    1. I think simply a bowl of soup at night would be ideal for me.
You should have your lightest meal at dinner.
My husband.....needs a full meal at night and protein 3x a day..

  6. Winter. How we dread it here. But soup -- ah, that helps us through the cold winter days. I love French onion -- I usually use Julia's recipe but will check Riccardo's. And I saw Marie's biscuit recipe and copied it down. Those look to be a hit! Love soup and bread. Rick is the bread baker -- I bake the other stuff. I would love to plant some garlic but I don't have any to plant. I am always a tad envious of those glorious scapes you show us each spring. It all looks cozy and wonderful.

Wishing you a lovely Thanksgiving weekend, my friend. I hope all is well, even if you can't share the table together as before.

  7. That French Onion soup looks fabulouus. Thanks for the recipe. We will try this soon!
You know M makes bread frequently, it is delicious, though I restrain from eating it very often. Usually when it first comes out of the oven, I will have some with honey or maramalade. A sweet treat! He bakes it in mini loaves, freezes them, and gives bags of bread to friends on a regulary delivery. His passionn, his love language!
Have I shared his recipe? It is a no knead bread. He has tweaked it to where it is his own now, and he uses various grains to make everything from white to flax to 7 grain and on. His favorite way to eat a mini loaf is to slice it length wise, toast it, then adds smoked salmon, creme fraiche, and cappers. Another favorite is to make grilled cheese sandwiches.
Sorry about the dahlia. I tried years ago. No success!
I'm enjoying the cooler weather, the quiet of our garden. My favorite time is early morning sitting out on the terrace, cup of coffee, Sadie by my side, and the squirrels scampering and birds singing. It's comforting, and I'm grateful to have such peaceful setting. Happy Sunday, dear friend.

I just heard on the news MAYBR a vaccine June 2021.And Broadway closed tll then..This is something else..
I am grateful too..don't get me wrong.
So sad for people I know suffering right now.so many:(

  8. Happy Sunday, Joe loves French onion soup. I’ve been making sour dough bread since August. Like you, I rarely ate bread but love it now. Today we have our granddaughter Claire’s baptism. Only the parents, grandparents and god parents are allowed to attend the Baptism. Wishing you a lovely Thanksgiving.

  9. Bread will be my last meal. I will start soon making some from a recipe I got from you. I don't keep it in the house so I won't eat it. The soup looks heavenly. My gardens were glorious this year, best ever. I'm sad (autumn has arrived) to see the flowers go. I'm really scared of the upcoming election. Like de Toqueville's writing about the U.S. - it has changed. Nice to see your always beautiful posts.

    1. I hope you are great and the Mr too:) Everyone..such a time of upheavel. What a mess.
Following the US election..we always have..4 yrs ago we were in Fl..some cheered some bawled their eyes out..many ..mariied couples w/ different ideas. My husband knew he would win.I didn't.
What kills me Donna..politics aside really..is the care team he had ..and they showed it on TV..while ordinary people w/ot that care staff were take off respirators and died.
It's not right to brag about the care you are getting while people ..less fortunate are dying.
      That image shocked me.
I hope I haven't offended you..I never want to offend anyone:)
      Take care..nice to see you:)

  11. What is better than soup and bread. My hubby loves bread in all forms. I think he would rather eat bread then desserts. The French Onion soup looks so tasty. Sorry about your dahlia. The weather is cooling a little here. Have a wonderful week.

  12. Oh my goodness, I can't believe I missed seeing this. Your poor dahlia :( Maybe it wasn't the best tuber to begin with. I think I would buy a new one in spring and see what happens. Sometimes slugs eat mine as they pop out of the ground too, especially if it's a rainy spring, then I sprinkle with diamotaceous earth to discourage them. I saw the soup on IG, so delicious!! We've had soup for the last two nights also. No bread as we're both trying to lose a few carb pounds we've put on with all the sourdough baking I've been doing since we aren't going out yet. What a beautiful loaf and I love your bread basket and tea towel! So fitting :) I do love a poached egg on toast with a little avocado smear. YUM! Sad about your family missing Thanksgiving together. Would have been yesterday, I believe. We know this can't go on forever but Holy Cow, it seems like it has. When I see political rallies with no masks it makes me so upset.

    1. It did look small..but it was local and hers grew and another girl had at least one also..so I can only blame me.I dug it up..broke one tuber..but there are a few and I will keep and try again.
She is a local dahlia grower.A nice hardworking girl.I trust her product.

Just saw the president at a rally..ohmgee no masks..
      We had beautiful days..pouring today..
I need peat moss to store my tubers..hope I find some.
I have a few extra pounds too:(It's bugging me..
I hope you get to be together for TG..it was not to be for us.

    2. Maybe it was just the crazy wet and hot summer we had. When I store my tubers, I wash them, let them dry (but not more than maybe 4-6 hours) then I wrap each tuber in cling wrap. It's worked for me for quite a few years. I do divide the tubers first, leaving an 'eye' on each one. I do lose a few but overall it has been pretty successful. I'm sure I found the method online long ago when Marie (Gardenbug) chastised me for not digging up my tubers every year - LOL.

  13. Oh, I do so hope that Winter is good to us. It has been a long time since I have experienced a Winter. I will need to get me some woolies. I am sorry about your tuber. No advice about it from me, I have black thumbs when it comes to gardening. Your soup will be on my list of things to make when I get sorted. Maybe for my sister and dad. I am sure they would love it. Love all that you share so generously with us always. But mostly I love you. You are kindness and caring personified and have blessed my life many times. Just coming here to look at your pictures and read your words has always been an oasis of peace for me through the years. xoxo PS - Happy the biscuits are a hit! Yay!!

  15. I always have to be careful with bread, but homemade bread is so exquis!! . And butter, Ne m'en parle pas!! I love it, but the weight concern is more important than having it. (I lost 30 pounds beginning last June and now work hard to keep it off...) Soup, every year I vow that I will cook more soup! I think this is the year!
I read what you wrote above about dt. bragging and it not being right. Most of what he says and does is terribly not right. In my opinion he is mentally unwell. Very scary.

I am so longing to visit your country. We've missed May and now October. But Canada is right not to let Americans in. My state has a relatively low incidence, but it's still very anxiety producing and if we don't continue to follow the precautions our numbers will go up.

    Hanging in there, Rita

  16. I feel for you about that dahlia. I gave up growing them a long time ago. Nothing but failures year after year. Now I just enjoy them at community gardens where they are plentiful and well tended by some very talented volunteers.

My family was the same with bread. For toast at breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. Never ever on the dinner table.
